This Tax Must Go!

It’s time to repeal this egregious tax. When I was in the City Council, I saw how politicians often take the easy way. This tax is the easy way out. It does not fix the problems that have left our county is such financial disarray. Instead, it is a band-aid that will offer only a few more days of respite from mismanaged county government.

The Sweetened Beverage Tax has got to go. Since it’s inception only a few days ago, we have already seen a mass exodus of consumers leaving the county to buy their goods in neighboring areas. I noticed it myself when I purchased a case of pop in Indiana vs. here in Chicago. There was a 25% difference in cost. Our taxpayers cannot afford this. We need to rethink how we run our county to embrace the changes necessary to get us on track to fiscal stability – not overtax those who need their money most.

Join me in reaching out to our county legislators to demand that the Sweetened Beverage Tax be repealed. Sign the petition below and use our website to tell your commissioners that this tax has to go.

Yours in Service,

Bob Fioretti

PETITION TO REPEAL THE SWEETENED BEVERAGE TAX
We, the undersigned residents of Cook County, demand the repeal of Article XXII, Sections 74-850 through 74-858 of the Cook County Code known as the Sweetened Beverage Tax.
Insufficient consideration was given to the consequence, both intended and unintended, of such an ill-advised and hastily enacted tax. Since its effective date of March 1, 2017, this ordinance has been the cause of confusion about its collection among retailers, the filing of numerous lawsuits costing taxpayers thousands of dollars in legal expenses, and an immense public outcry.
Therefore, we petition in support of a proposed ordinance to rescind this egregiously excessive tax upon the citizens of Cook County.
